St Bride’s is one of the oldest churches in London, dating back over 2,000 years. The current building was designed by Christopher Wren in 1627. It’s probably most famous for its spire, said to have inspired a baker to make what is now the traditional tiered wedding cake.

As part of my ongoing project to explore Nottingham’s architecture the first photo shows what used to be the Nottingham Playhouse before it moved premises (to Wellington Circus – a lovely theatre, I’d recommend a visit). This building (now a pub) was opened in 1910 as a cinema which was called The Little Theatre by the 1940s and then became the Nottingham Playhouse in 1948. It moved to its new premises in 1963.

St Clement Danes Church in London is one of a group of churches that I had time to photograph but not go inside and visit properly (and which I do intend to rectify when I’m next in the area). The first church on the site was built by the Danes (hence the name) but the church that stands there now is a 17th century Christopher Wren design.

The second site I visited as part of the Open Heritage Weekend was St Martin’s Church in Bilborough. I’d been planning on coming here anyway, as an exhibition on Evelyn Gibbs, whose mural can be found at the church, had caught my eye on my last visit to Nottingham Castle, so this proved to be a good opportunity to visit.

The lovely, and somewhat compact, St Mary’s Church in the grounds of Sudeley Castle is the final resting place of Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s sixth wife and the only one to survive him. She is the only queen to be buried on private land.

On a recent holiday to the Cotswolds we spent some time in the picturesque village of Bibury in Gloucestershire. One of the places we had a look around was St Mary’s Church, a Grade I listed building.

On the same day I visited the Monument to the Great Fire of London I walked a little further down the road until I came to St Dunstan in the East, a Church of England church built around 1100 that was badly damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666.

When we visited Gunby Hall we also went on to explore St Peter’s Church which, like so many churches on National Trust grounds, is not maintained by the Trust. In fact this church serves a congregation of only around 20 people.

In what I’m planning to be a continuing exploration of Nottingham’s architecture, one day in March I decided to walk around some of the suburbs of Nottingham, taking pictures of any old buildings that caught my eye and when I got home did a bit of research to see if any had a particularly interesting story. Most did, and I learnt a lot of interesting facts about buildings I’ve passed but never given much thought to before.

On my first full day in Oslo, after buying my Oslo Pass (which I would highly recommend as it gives you free entry to 30 museums and free travel on public transport for set periods of time, among other things) I headed over to Akershus Fortress.
