Nottingham Light Night 2024

Another February, another Light Night event. This is a real highlight of the arts calendar in Nottingham and as ever there was so much going on that we always have to be quite selective about what we visit. We started off as we have before at Sneinton Market which had an interesting light display in a box named Geist, the design of which is based off of a neutrino or “ghost particle”.

Nottingham Light Night 2023

Light Night is always a highlight of Nottingham’s cultural calendar and this, its 15th year, showcased a lot of new attractions to visit and photograph. It takes part over two days and most things (though not all) are available on both days so usually we just go on the Friday evening. There is a quite handy official app that I use to plan the route around the city (there’s so much going on its impossible to do everything). Our first stop was at Sneinton Market Square where they had these giant bubbles called Evanescent created by Australian artists Atelier Sisu that is I believe touring the country (they were in London last month). They’re quite fun and the changing colours were very pretty.

Nottingham Light Night 2022

Last weekend Light Night returned to Nottingham for the first time since 2020. It wasn’t quite as impressive as previous years but that’s understandable given current circumstances and there were still a lot of places taking part that we didn’t visit due to time constraints.

Nottingham Light Night 2020

Another February, another Light Night. This is always a good event to go to every year and as ever the city centre was packed with people from all ages. For this year as well the event was spread over both the Friday and the Saturday night, though I only made it out on the Friday. There’s never enough time to see everything so we did a loop from Trinity Square to listen to some of the choirs, round through Market Square to the very impressive art works projected onto the Council House, over to St Mary’s Church in the Lace Market and then up to Nottingham Contemporary art gallery. A few of my favourite light displays are below.

Nottingham Light Night 2019

As is tradition we visited Nottingham’s Light Night event last Friday and as is also tradition, there just isn’t time to see everything so I planned a route around the city that would work for the time we had available. The only thing we didn’t manage to visit was the Museum of the Moon at the Concert Hall – kudos to everyone who was prepared to stand in the exceptionally long lines to get in, we decided in the end that we were prepared to skip it for other things.

St Mary’s Church, Sudeley

The lovely, and somewhat compact, St Mary’s Church in the grounds of Sudeley Castle is the final resting place of Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s sixth wife and the only one to survive him. She is the only queen to be buried on private land.

St Mary’s Church, Bibury

On a recent holiday to the Cotswolds we spent some time in the picturesque village of Bibury in Gloucestershire. One of the places we had a look around was St Mary’s Church, a Grade I listed building.

St. Peter’s Church, Nottingham

I decided late last year that it was about time I paid a visit to St. Peter’s Church which is right in the centre of Nottingham, and which I’ve never set foot in before. It is one of three churches in Nottingham that dates from the Middle Ages, with St. Mary’s being another.

St Mary’s Church, Nottingham

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space. You can find all relevant photos here.

On a Friday near the end of June I was walking through Nottingham City Centre when the heavens opened jut as I was passing St Mary’s Church. Since I’d never been in before, and thankfully I had my camera with me, I thought it was the perfect chance to explore somewhere new and shelter from the rain at the same time.
