Continuing on from my earlier post about some of Leicester’s interesting buildings, this is St Nicholas’ Church, the oldest surviving place of worship in Leicester. Built around the 9th or 10th century there are still some original features left such as the original walls of the nave, though part of it was demolished after 1600 and the spire was removed in 1805.

On a sunny day last year we headed to Derbyshire and Hardwick Hall, a stunning Elizabethan house built by Elizabeth Shrewsbury, best known as Bess of Hardwick. Rather than explore the house on this visit we decided to take advantage of the nice weather and go on some of the walks around the Estate and the gardens, which did however bring us close enough to admire the Hall.

As well as exploring all things Richard III on my trip to Leicester I also took a lot of photographs of buildings that caught my eye – finding out about the significance of these buildings was greatly aided by information panels conveniently positioned nearby, a practice of which I heartily approve and that Nottingham could really do with emulating.

Back in June a friend and I went to Leicester to visit the King Richard III Visitor Centre. I imagine you’d be hard pressed to find someone who isn’t familiar with the story of Richard’s remains being found in a car park and finally being laid to rest in Leicester Cathedral (the focus of the next post) and the Visitor Centre did an excellent job of collating all that information.

On the same day we visited the Monkey Forest we headed next door to Trentham Gardens. Examining a map beforehand we decided to walk around the mile long Trentham Lake, designed by Capability Brown, stopping off to also visit the ruins of Trentham Hall and the Italian Gardens.

Back in August, I went on an excellent holiday to Oslo in Norway. One of the first things I did after checking into my hotel (a very smooth process, I’d definitely recommend them, and they are literally next door to Oslo Central Train Station) was to take a walk around the city and familiarise myself with the local area. Some of these places I visited again more fully and some I chose not to revisit because there were other places I wanted to see more since there are only so many hours in the day even for me when I’m in full on travelling mode. (You may have noticed I can pack a lot in when I go travelling!) But this is a good starting place for what will be a series of posts about the places I visited during my time in Norway and mainly focus on places I visited but did not explore fully.

I’d been inspired by a photograph I’d seen online to go and see this impressive looking cathedral with its three spires for myself. I’d also read about the tours of the towers that the Cathedral offered, but in the end the changeable weather made me decide to forego looking into that on the day I visited. The first cathedral on the site was founded in 700AD and the spires were completed after the Cathedral had been around for 600 years.
