Crystal Palace Park

On a rare sunny day in April, while I was in London, I decided to take advantage of the weather and head over to see the dinosaurs at Crystal Palace Park, which I’d been meaning to do for some time. After the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park closed the large glass and iron structure of Crystal Palace moved to the park. A series of over 30 sculptures were commissioned in 1852 and placed in the grounds of the Park, including dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures.

London Canal Museum

On a trip to the theatre in London I found myself with a few hours to spare and decided to head to the London Canal Museum which is only a short walk from King’s Cross Station. As to be expected for such a niche museum it is quite small, consisting of just two floors, but at just £4 it was a reasonably priced way to spend an hour.

Strawberry Hill House

I think I must have read about Strawberry Hill House on one of those lists of unusual things to do in London which I often reference. It was the home of Horace Walpole, son of England’s first Prime Minister and the author of The Castle of Otranto, the Gothic novel which was inspired by his home.

Tower of London: Poppy Display

The Geffrye Museum of the Home

The Geffrye Museum was another one of London’s museums that had piqued my interest by not being very well known. It turned out to be well worth a visit in August, despite terrible weather, not least because 2014 marks the 100th year the museum has been open, and 300 years since the almshouses (where the museum now resides) were opened.

Horniman Museum and Gardens Part Two: The Gardens

I’m very glad that I took a walk around, even though the rain was absolutely horrendous, because not only did I see this lovely Grade II listed Victorian conservatory which was originally at the Horniman’s house in Croydon…

The Natural History Museum – Mammoth: Ice Age Giants Exhibition

First off, going to the Natural History Museum on a bank holiday is not a life choice I’ll be repeating. It is one of my favourite London museums, but the queues on the bank holiday in August were atrocious. However, to their credit the staff did deal with the crowds very efficiently and as this was my only opportunity to see the mammoth exhibit before it ended, I decided to stick it out.

The Sherlock Holmes Museum

I’ve been meaning to visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum for a while but have always ended up not having the time. However, on a trip in May I decided to head out after a theatre matinee performance (where I saw the very moving Peter and Alice with Ben Whishaw and Judi Dench) because I knew they were open till 6pm and everywhere else I would like to visit closed at around 5pm.
