Cathedral Church of St Barnabas, Nottingham

St Barnabas has been on my list of places to visit in Nottingham for a while now, somewhere I kept meaning to visit every time I went to the Playhouse nearby, and I finally found time in November to take a look. Designed by Augustus Pugin, the architect of the interior of the Palace of Westminster, construction of the cathedral began in 1842 and it was consecrated in 1844 when a bishop from Rome brought the relics of St Barnabas with him. When it was opened it was the largest Catholic church built in England since the Reformation.

Behind the Scenes at Nottingham Central Library

[Note: This took place before it was announced that Nottingham City Council have sold the library building as office space. At time of writing there is no clear plan as to what they are going to do with the library].

I managed to visit three different sites during Heritage Open Weekend in September,  (yep, that behind with writing things up again!) where places in England open up for free or access is granted to places normally closed to the public. One of the options available that caught my eye was a behind the scenes tour of Nottingham Central Library which is my local library.

Leicester Cathedral

The main focus on a recent trip to Leicester was all things Richard III and naturally that included a visit to Leicester Cathedral where his remains were reinterred on March 26th 2015. After having been to the Visitor Centre and seen displays on how the remains were discovered (blog post here) we were keen to see his final resting place for ourselves.

King Richard III Visitor Centre

Back in June a friend and I went to Leicester to visit the King Richard III Visitor Centre. I imagine you’d be hard pressed to find someone who isn’t familiar with the story of Richard’s remains being found in a car park and finally being laid to rest in Leicester Cathedral (the focus of the next post) and the Visitor Centre did an excellent job of collating all that information.

St Peter’s Church, Gunby

When we visited Gunby Hall we also went on to explore St Peter’s Church which, like so many churches on National Trust grounds, is not maintained by the Trust. In fact this church serves a congregation of only around 20 people.

Lichfield Cathedral

I’d been inspired by a photograph I’d seen online to go and see this impressive looking cathedral with its three spires for myself. I’d also read about the tours of the towers that the Cathedral offered, but in the end the changeable weather made me decide to forego looking into that on the day I visited. The first cathedral on the site was founded in 700AD and the spires were completed after the Cathedral had been around for 600 years.

St Andrew’s Church, Rugby

On one of my recent outings I had to change from a train to a bus in Rugby and found myself with roughly half an hour to spare. Taking a short walk from the bus stop I spotted St Andrew’s Church and decided to pop inside.

The Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Newark

While visiting Newark the impressive spire of St. Mary Magdalene Church caught my eye and I decided to take a closer look. It’s apparently one of the largest parish churches in the country, and it certainly proved larger than I was expecting when I stepped inside.

I decided late last year that it was about time I paid a visit to St. Peter’s Church which is right in the centre of Nottingham, and which I’ve never set foot in before. It is one of three churches in Nottingham that dates from the Middle Ages, with St. Mary’s being another.
