In what I’m planning to be a continuing exploration of Nottingham’s architecture, one day in March I decided to walk around some of the suburbs of Nottingham, taking pictures of any old buildings that caught my eye and when I got home did a bit of research to see if any had a particularly interesting story. Most did, and I learnt a lot of interesting facts about buildings I’ve passed but never given much thought to before.

This week Nottingham has hosted the European Archery Championship and I was able to attend the morning session on Sunday 29 May held in the Market Square. This is the first time that the competition has been held in Britain for nearly 40 years and as the last opportunity for some archers to secure a place at the 2016 Rio Olympics it’s a pretty big deal.

Whilst visiting the Bressingham Steam Museum we also visited the gardens which are next to it. There are six distinct gardens laid out over 17 acres, and as such were much more impressive than we had expected.

A trip to Bressingham Steam and Gardens in Norfolk was, unsurprisingly, my Dad’s idea but it actually turned out to be quite interesting. The grounds were so extensive that this first post will concentrate on the steam museum, and the second will focus on the gardens.

The Munch Museum in Oslo has the largest collection of Edvard Munch’s work in the world and when I visited their exhibition focused on the parallels between Munch’s work and that of Vincent van Gogh.

Another place I visited when I was in Lichfield was the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum. Built for Johnson’s parents in 1707-8 it was their family home and the family bookshop and Samuel was born there in 1709.

Whilst visiting Litchfield Cathedral I noted that directly opposite the front entrance was the Erasmus Darwin House and Herb Garden. Erasmus was Charles Darwin’s grandfather who came to Litchfield in 1756 and moved into this house with his wife in 1758.

I’d been inspired by a photograph I’d seen online to go and see this impressive looking cathedral with its three spires for myself. I’d also read about the tours of the towers that the Cathedral offered, but in the end the changeable weather made me decide to forego looking into that on the day I visited. The first cathedral on the site was founded in 700AD and the spires were completed after the Cathedral had been around for 600 years.

On a spectacularly sunny day in June a friend and I travelled to Ryton Organic Gardens, near Coventry. She’d heard about the gardens because of the on site vegetarian/vegan café and we thought it would make for a good day out.

On one of my recent outings I had to change from a train to a bus in Rugby and found myself with roughly half an hour to spare. Taking a short walk from the bus stop I spotted St Andrew’s Church and decided to pop inside.
