Six terraced houses, now offices, these were largely designed by Nottingham architect Thomas Chambers Hine in the Flemish Renaissance style. Built around 1848-1851 they are a striking set of buildings and are Grade II listed. Hines himself died at 25 Regent Street in 1899.
The Birkin Building in the Lace Market in Nottingham was designed by Thomas Chambers Hine another architect who, like Watson Fothergill, made a big impact on the city. It was, of course, a lace warehouse made for Richard Birkin, a lace manufacturer, in 1855.
The Adams Building is one of my favourite buildings in Nottingham, a Grade II listed Victorian lace warehouse dating from 1855 which was designed by Thomas Chambers Hine, one of Nottingham’s best architects. During Open Heritage weekend last year we were able to go on a free tour of the building led by an architect from the company who helps preserve the building, which proved to be a intriguing warren of rooms and spiral staircases.
The YMCA International Community Centre on Mansfield Road is housed in what was the Bluecoat Charity School. The school was founded in 1706 as the first charity school in Nottingham and classes were at first taught at St Mary’s Church and then in a building on High Pavement. They moved to the Mansfield Road Site, a building designed by Thomas Chambers Hine, in around 1853.
