On my last afternoon in Shrewsbury I decided to take a trip on a boat along the River Severn. There are daily trips between 1st March until 31st October and 11am to 4pm, leaving on the hour. I’d read that seats are issued in order of booking so you’re not guaranteed a seat on the top deck which is why I decided to book in advance as I’d seen long queues for the boats when I’d walked by on previous days. Thankfully though there was plenty of room on top for my 3pm trip on a random Thursday despite there also being several parties on board celebrating birthdays.

There is table service on board which is a nice touch – I had a lemonade but felt the journey was a little too short to comfortably finish it – we had a slightly shorter trip than usual due to the river levels. Booking in advance does give you a seat reservation.

The name of the boat (there is only one) is Sabrina after the goddess of the River Severn. The original boat began operating in the ’70s but it is a much more modern operation these days. Though one funny thing did happen on my trip – the engine cut out and we slowly drifted towards a willow on the bank. No one was hurt and it was dealt with very professionally by the staff who soon got the engine running again.

The trip lasts around 45 minutes, starting at Victoria Quay by the Welsh Bridge with the captain keping up a running commentary of all the sights on both banks of the river.

These include places I’ve already posted about including the Dingle and St. Chad’s Church and Shrewsbury Cathedral. But also the Pengwern Boat Club which was founded in 1871, though the clubhouse was built in 1881.

Plus the houses that back onto the river and have their own docks.

It was a lovely trip and very informative. Adult tickets cost £12.50 and you can buy in advance or as you board on the day.
