Garden Visitors

Every so often I do a post about the birds and animals I’ve photographed in the garden. We’ve had quite a few interesting visitors that I haven’t managed to photograph or that we’ve only caught on our nature camera overnight such as cats, hedgehogs, foxes and once quite memorably a badger but there are others that stuck around long enough for me to grab my camera. One such creature was this rat which had taken a liking to the seeds I put out for the birds (I moved the bird feeder around and took a break from re-filling it and this worked for a little while). [Since starting to write this post I found the rat dead in our garden – RIP].

Happy Valley Botanical Gardens, Llandudno

Happy Valley Botanical Gardens are tucked away at the side of the Great Orme just along from the pier. The land was that of a former quarry which was gifted to the town by Lord Mostyn in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. The quarry was turned into gardens with an open air theatre and miniature golf course which has since been turned back into gardens and a ski slope and toboggan run.

St Mary’s Garden, London

St Mary’s Garden is a small public garden located next to the Garden Museum. It was created by Lambeth Borough Council in around 1932. It was originally part of the road which lead to the original Lambeth Bridge in 1862 which has since been replaced by a bridge further to the south.

Autumn at Woodthorpe Grange Park

Just over a week ago I took a walk around Woodthorpe Grange Park as I wanted to photograph the changing of the leaves. A surprising number were still green but there were also some beautuifl reds and golds on display.

Squirrels

We’ve had a couple of squirrel visitors in our garden for several months now. One of them looks perfectly healthy, the other has an injury and at one point all of the fur on his right paw was missing, but now that seems to have grown back. Only the last photo shows the squirrel’s injury clearly, so if you’d rather not see that then simply stop scrolling after photo number five.

Brompton Cemetery, London

After my very successful tour of Highgate Cemetery I decided that I would like to cross off all the so-called “Magnificent Seven” cemeteries in London, starting with Brompton. Opened in 1840 over 200,000 people are buried here and it is the only cemetery in the country managed by the Royal Parks on behalf of the nation. At over 40 acres it was specifically designed to resemble the layout of an open air cathedral and has some stunningly impressive architecture as well as being the final resting place of a large amount of interesting and notable people.

Wollaton Hall in the Snow

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

My plan for Saturday was to head to Wollaton Hall to take photos of the deer in the snow, something I’ve not managed to do before. We had some snow overnight but the roads were clear so we headed out in the search of deer. At first we didn’t think we were going to see any but the grounds looked beautiful in the snow and there were lots of people, adults and children, enjoying a bit of sledging. Then, just as we had decided to head back home we came across this lovely herd.

Crystal Palace Park

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

On a rare sunny day in April, while I was in London, I decided to take advantage of the weather and head over to see the dinosaurs at Crystal Palace Park, which I’d been meaning to do for some time. After the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park closed the large glass and iron structure of Crystal Palace moved to the park. A series of over 30 sculptures were commissioned in 1852 and placed in the grounds of the Park, including dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures.
