Gunby Hall and Gardens

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

On a gorgeously sunny day (remember them?) we decided to head out to Gunby Hall and Gardens, a National Trust property in Lincolnshire. A country house built around 1700, it’s one of those rare properties I like because it feels like a home, and not somewhere to be admired because of its beautiful rooms.

London Canal Museum

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

On a trip to the theatre in London I found myself with a few hours to spare and decided to head to the London Canal Museum which is only a short walk from King’s Cross Station. As to be expected for such a niche museum it is quite small, consisting of just two floors, but at just £4 it was a reasonably priced way to spend an hour.

The Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve in Cambridgeshire is one of Britain’s oldest nature reserves and one of the last remaining areas of undrained fenland. It has been cared for by the National Trust since 1899.

Africa Alive!

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

Africa Alive! is a wildlife park in Suffolk; purchased in 1991 it is part of the Zoological Society of East Anglia, along with its sister organisation Banham Zoo. They have around 1,000 species from Africa over 100 acres of parkland and we ended up spending the entire day there, finding much to explore from animals we were familiar with to those we were decidedly not.

Nottingham Architecture: Part One

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

In what I’m planning to be a continuing exploration of Nottingham’s architecture, one day in March I decided to walk around some of the suburbs of Nottingham, taking pictures of any old buildings that caught my eye and when I got home did a bit of research to see if any had a particularly interesting story.  Most did, and I learnt a lot of interesting facts about buildings I’ve passed but never given much thought to before.

European Archery Championship 2016 – Nottingham

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

This week Nottingham has hosted the European Archery Championship and I was able to attend the morning session on Sunday 29 May held in the Market Square.  This is the first time that the competition has been held in Britain for nearly 40 years and as the last opportunity for some archers to secure a place at the 2016 Rio Olympics it’s a pretty big deal.

Bressingham Steam and Gardens: The Gardens

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

Whilst visiting the Bressingham Steam Museum we also visited the gardens which are next to it. There are six distinct gardens laid out over 17 acres, and as such were much more impressive than we had expected.

Bressingham Steam and Gardens: The Museum

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

A trip to Bressingham Steam and Gardens in Norfolk was, unsurprisingly, my Dad’s idea but it actually turned out to be quite interesting. The grounds were so extensive that this first post will concentrate on the steam museum, and the second will focus on the gardens.

Holmenkollen Ski Museum, Oslo

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

Holmenkollen Ski Museum is on the ground floor of the ski jump and even though my main aim had been to go up the viewing tower I’d decided I may as well visit the museum as I was there anyway. It actually proved to be much more interesting than I was expecting. Opened in 1923 it is the world’s oldest museum dedicated to the history of skiing.

Holmenkollen Ski Jump, Oslo

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

On my last day in Oslo I decided to head up to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump, not because I have any particular interest in skiing but because the guidebooks indicated that the views of Oslo and its surroundings would be well worth the trip. And they were definitely right. After a 20 minute ride on the metro, and a (somewhat strenuous) walk up the hill the views were already proving to be fantastic, and that only increased as I went up the lift to the very top of the ski jump.
