Lotherton: Wildlife World

Lotherton is an Edwardian house and country estate with gardens, extensive grounds, a deer park and a small zoo. When I first visited back in 2013 you couldn’t take photos inside the house and Wildlife World was originally a bird garden. Much has changed since then however and I’m splitting these posts into the zoo, the house, the chapel and the gardens, starting with our first destination of the zoo. There is still more of a concentration on birds here than on the animals they’ve since acquired and one of my favourites was this lovely Edward’s pheasant, named after a former director of the Natural History Museum in Paris.

Whipsnade Zoo

At the beginning of May we went on a trip to Whipsnade Zoo – one of two zoos (the other being London Zoo) that are owned by the Zoological Society of London, a charity devoted to wildlife conservation. It’s the UK’s largest zoo covering over 600 acres and we were very impressed with how much space the animals had to roam around.

ARTIS Royal Amsterdam Zoo

ARTIS Royal Zoo is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, founded in 1838 for members only and then opened to the public in 1851. The zoo is in the centre of Amsterdam, in a nice quiet leafy neighbourhood and far larger than I had been expecting.

Chester Zoo

We visited Chester Zoo on our way home from Wales as none of us had been there before. We were very impressed. Opened in 1931 it’s one of the UK’s largest zoos and therefore does take a long time to go around and see everything, which is usually our general aim when we visit anything animal related. We saw some old favourites but also animals and birds we’d not seen before. One of my favourites was the jaguar, who just came into view as I was walking around the corner.

The Welsh Mountain Zoo

The Welsh Mountain Zoo in North Wales opened on 18 May 1963 and became the National Zoo of Wales in 2008. It was founded by the naturalist Robert Jackson and run by him and after his death by his family until 1983 when it was taken over by the Zoological Society of Wales. One of its more interesting features is its location, as the name suggests, high up a mountain with views of the sea as well as woodlands.

Colchester Zoo

Last Christmas my brother had sponsored an elephant for me and once I’d filled in the registration form I received a free ticket to Colchester Zoo, which then became the focus of a few days away in Essex. Opened in 1963 it now cares for over 260 different species over 60 acres of parkland and lakes.

Edinburgh Zoo

One of the things we definitely wanted to do on a recent trip to Scotland was visit Edinburgh Zoo. Naturally we were hoping to be able to see the pandas – a timed ticket for their enclosure is a must and is included in the main ticket price which is cheaper if booked in advance.  Thankfully we were rewarded in our planning by arriving just in time to see the male panda enjoying some bamboo before lying down for a sleep in the sunshine.

Africa Alive!

Africa Alive! is a wildlife park in Suffolk; purchased in 1991 it is part of the Zoological Society of East Anglia, along with its sister organisation Banham Zoo. They have around 1,000 species from Africa over 100 acres of parkland and we ended up spending the entire day there, finding much to explore from animals we were familiar with to those we were decidedly not.

Iceland Part Thirteen: Reykjavik Family Park and Zoo

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space. You can find all relevant photos here.

Since my final full day was so nice that I actually had to use the sunglasses I’d thankfully thought to pack, I decided to walk out to Laugardalur Valley and visit the zoo. It’s open all year round but I suspect that it’s a bit livelier in the summer than when I went.
