Last Christmas my brother had sponsored an elephant for me and once I’d filled in the registration form I received a free ticket to Colchester Zoo, which then became the focus of a few days away in Essex. Opened in 1963 it now cares for over 260 different species over 60 acres of parkland and lakes.
We found the zoo to be excellent with lots to see and get close to. I’ll just highlight some of my favourite animals here starting with the wolves, which I’ve never been this close to before and which along with cheetahs are my absolute favourites. (The zoo does have cheetahs as well but we weren’t lucky enough to see them on this visit).
