On one of our sunnier June days I decided to take photos of all the wicker sculptures that make up this year’s floral trail, organised by Nottingham City Council’s Nottingham in Bloom Team and the Nottingham Business Improvement District.

While visiting Newark the impressive spire of St. Mary Magdalene Church caught my eye and I decided to take a closer look. It’s apparently one of the largest parish churches in the country, and it certainly proved larger than I was expecting when I stepped inside.

On my recent visit to Newark I popped in to the Tourist Information Centre where they recommended I visit the Town Hall Museum. It’s certainly housed within an impressive building; built in 1776 it is Grade I listed and the museum opened up in part of the building in 1999. Entry was free, though unfortunately photography was not allowed inside.

On what proved to be a slightly more blustery day than I had expected I decided to head out to Newark Castle. I didn’t know much about the site other than it was now ruins so I would highly recommend taking advantage of the guided tour. It doesn’t happen every day so you do have to ring Newark Tourist Information in advance but I found it very interesting and it does give you the opportunity to enter areas which are usually closed to the public, such as the towers and undercroft.

On an extremely blustery day in March I decided to visit Mr Straw’s House, a National Trust property in Worksop. It’s been on my radar for a while and thanks to the excellent directions on their website it was even easier to locate than I’d been expecting – a quick 10 minute walk away from Worksop train station. The House, which doesn’t look very impressive from the outside, is an intriguing snapshot inside of life in the 1920s; even though there was a Straw living in the house well into the 1980s, the house has hardly been altered since 1923.

We recently returned to the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham, for the first time in about 10 years. We were partly attracted by the new colony of Gentoo penguins and of course to revisit the underwater ocean tunnel, the only one in the UK which is 360 degrees.
Nottingham Castle is a staple of Nottingham’s cityscape and somewhere I’ve visited a lot, but not specifically written about. The name Castle is perhaps a bit of a misnomer, and tourists can be taken aback that it doesn’t fit the stereotypical appearance of a castle. In fact the current incarnation is the 17th century ducal mansion that was built on the site of the Medieval Castle.

I decided late last year that it was about time I paid a visit to St. Peter’s Church which is right in the centre of Nottingham, and which I’ve never set foot in before. It is one of three churches in Nottingham that dates from the Middle Ages, with St. Mary’s being another.

On the same day I visited Green’s Windmill I headed to the William Booth Birthplace Museum which is nearby; until I spotted it on Google maps when I was checking the directions to the Mill I had no idea the place even existed. William Booth was of course the founder of the Salvation Army, an organisation I don’t support, but it is still an important part of Nottingham’s history and a chance to see inside a lower middle class house from the 1820s.

On a surprisingly mild day in October last year I headed out to Green’s Windmill, somewhere I hadn’t been in at least 20 years. It is a restored and working 19th century tower windmill, though unfortunately when I visited it wasn’t actually working as the sails are damaged and in need of restoration.
