Wollaton Hall is a gorgeous Elizabethan mansion set in extensive grounds. In fact I was struck anew on my latest visit by just how lovely a building it is.

After my trip to Martin’s Pond Nature Reserve, I had a look back through my photos and realised that it had been at least 5 years since I’d last visited the nearby Wollaton Hall. I decided therefore to make a day of it, exploring both the grounds and the Hall itself.

Martin’s Pond, Harrison’s Plantation and Raleigh Pond

On a cloudy day in September I decided to explore one of Nottingham’s hidden areas, Martin’s Pond. I only became aware of its existence recently, even though it is very close to Wollaton Hall, as it is tucked away in a residential area. What I discovered on my wanderings though, was that Martin’s Pond is linked by a trail with Harrison’s Plantation, which in turn leads on to Raleigh Pond, hence putting them together in one post.

Nottingham Castle: Trent to Trenches Exhibition 2014

I visited the Trent to Trenches Exhibition at Nottingham Castle in November, just before it was to come to a close. I’d already heard many good things about it, and thankfully this was borne out on my visit. In the centenary year of the start of the First World War, the exhibition focuses on the people of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire at home and in the trenches during that time.
The Galleries of Justice Museum, Nottingham

The Galleries of Justice Museum is in what was once Nottinghamshire’s old Courthouse and County Goal and was opened as a museum in 1995. It’s an impressive building from outside and is surprisingly deceptive in terms of just how large it is and how far down it goes.

The Arboretum, Nottingham

On what proved to be a warm but overcast day in June I headed out to The Arboretum, somewhere I haven’t been since a child. I didn’t really have much memory of the place, which is Nottingham’s first and therefore oldest public park and was opened in 1852.

St Mary’s Church, Nottingham

On a Friday near the end of June I was walking through Nottingham City Centre when the heavens opened jut as I was passing St Mary’s Church. Since I’d never been in before, and thankfully I had my camera with me, I thought it was the perfect chance to explore somewhere new and shelter from the rain at the same time.

The Museum of Nottingham Life at Brewhouse Yard

Recently I decided to visit the Museum of Nottingham Life at Brewhouse Yard which, as I mentioned in my post about Nottingham Light Night, I didn’t think I’d visited before, though it actually appears I may have made a trip there when I was at primary school. Regardless it all felt new and has certainly undergone some changes since that trip. It is based just around the corner from the entrance to Nottingham Castle, right next to Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem and traces the social history of Nottingham over the past 300 years. It spans five 17th century houses and includes a school room, kitchen and bedroom, shop fronts such as grocers and pharmacies and an air raid shelter from the Second World War.
Nottingham Light Night

Nottingham’s Light Night has been running for quite a few years now, and although I had been aware of it before I had never taken the time to explore any of the events, until this past Friday, 28th February. This year’s focus was Nottingham Castle and it made a nice change to wander around the grounds at night, even if you did have to be very careful about your footing on some of the paths. I was also very glad that I had bought a ticket in advance (£4 instead of £5), because the queue when I arrived at the Castle was extremely long and with a ticket already I was able to bypass that and go straight in with no waiting around.
This year’s theme at the Castle was also tying in with the Centenary of World War I events going on around the country and I particularly liked the videos which were projected onto the side of the Castle, as seen below:

Armed Forces Day 2013

Nottingham recently played host to the fifth Armed Forces Day and as it was right on my doorstep, I decided to head along. It was a fairly overcast day which did eventually brighten. There was a parade heading off from Nottingham Castle towards the Market Square, where I was, a Drumhead Service – which I learned is a church service conducted in the field with drums acting as an altar -plus a fly past by the Red Arrows and RAF Typhoon aircraft.
