The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge

The Fitzwilliam Museum has been on my to visit list for a very long time and I made sure to fit it into my plans on this trip. Entrance is free but it is advised to book a timed ticket anyway for the exhibitions even though they’re also free. When I visited the exhibition was Islanders: The Making of the Mediterranean and I had a ticket for opening time at 10am which meant I had plenty of time to wander around the exhibition and then through the rest of the museum without it feeling too crowded.

King’s College Chapel, Cambridge

Last March I went on a five night trip to Cambridge. One of the reasons I wanted to visit the city was to see King’s College Chapel. I’m not at all religious but I do like a good Christmas carol and watch the carols from King’s programme each year and have always admired the setting. Needless to say I was not disappointed.

‘Tis the Season: Christmas Decorations 2023

Decorations for the Christmas tree are an easy souvenir from my travels, usually small so easily packed away in hand luggage. The first was from Cambridge and is of King’s College Chapel which you’ll be able to read about in a couple of weeks.

Ely Museum

With a little time to kill before I caught a train home from visiting Ely Cathedral I decided to head to Ely Museum at the Old Goal as it seemed small enough that it wouldn’t take long to see everything. Admission was a reasonable £4.50 and I found the museum very interesting.

Stained Glass Museum, Ely Cathedral

The Stained Glass Museum inside Ely Cathedral is the only UK museum of its type and as someone who loves the beauty and details of stained glass I was really looking forward to visiting and was not disappointed. Since it was founded in 1972 it has collected and preserved over 1,000 different stained glass panels and windows dating from the 13th century to the present, both religious and secular. Most are from the UK but there are some examples from Europe and the US as well.

Ely Cathedral

I’d been looking for some places to visit that are easily accessible by train and I was surprised to find a pretty cheap ticket to Ely for less than £10 so decided that it was time to tick off Ely Cathedral from my to do list.

We enjoyed our first trip to Wicken Fen so much that we decided to make a return trip. It is one of the first properties that the National Trust took on, in 1899, and is host to over 9,000 species of wildlife.
