Week Twenty

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

At the beginning of last week, in what seems a distant time when it wasn’t raining constantly, I went on a walk around Kitsilano. Following random roads I found myself walking through some parks and eventually arrived at Granville Island and came across some very cute baby geese. Pics below:

Week Nineteen

No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, I did skip a week last Sunday. But then it was my birthday and my parents and brother were in town so I figured I could do with a week off. And of course because they were here I did a lot more touristy things than I had been doing previously.

As well as the Downtown area of Vancouver and some shopping we walked along the waterfront and I showed them the Olympic Cauldron and some of the sculptures there and around the new conference centre (it was night and none of my pics of the area have come out well – I’ll have to go again during the day as there’s a sculpture of an Orca whale by Douglas Coupland I want to have a decent picture of).

Week Seventeen

Another slow week this time, with the job-hunting continuing. I did however go to a reading by sci fi writer Robert J. Sawyer at the library one evening. He read from his new book and answered some interesting questions about the future of publishing and how e-books are affecting traditional book sales. He was also signing books and I got a copy of FlashForward signed (the tv series is based on his novel).

The weather has been great, very warm and sunny, so let’s hope that continues. I’ve been continuing with my exploration of the neighbourhood and tried out a local Malaysian restaurant with my roommate which had some delicious food on offer, plus a good selection of cocktails, which is always a plus in my book!

And that’s been it really. I am starting to get quite a bit of writing done, so this downtime is good for something at least. I should definitely have more to report next week, as there are lots of tourist activities on the horizon.

Week Sixteen

Another terribly short entry this week. I’ve finally moved out of my place in North Vancouver to one in Kitsilano, which is much more vibrant and close to everything, including the beach, so I’m hoping it will be a better fit. Still job-searching but at least having time to write in the downtime.

Hopefully I’ll have something more interesting to share next week!

Week Fifteen

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

I’m still unemployed at the moment, so this has been a fairly quiet week of job-hunting and running errands rather than anything too touristy. The weather hasn’t helped either, going from bright sunshine to torrential rain from one day to the next. I did however visit the Science Museum on Friday evening. They were having one of their After Dark nights, an adults only affair where we can play with the exhibits ourselves without kids getting in the way! It was quite a bit of fun and there was a bar and some stand-up comedians. All of them did a good job considering they were instructed to make jokes centred around Earth Day (which had been the day before) in their routines, though the worst by far was the sole female comedian, who did not go down too well. I’m sorry, but it isn’t necessary to make crass sexual jokes the minute you step onto the stage – none of the men did.

Next week should be slightly busier with my upcoming move and hopefully other events in the pipeline. Till next week…

Week Fourteen

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

This has been a fairly relaxing week. The sun has been shining almost constantly and as my job finished last week and my temping agency hadn’t got anything for me I decided to take this past week off. I’ve been catching up on my emails (as some of you will be glad to see!) and doing some exploring around Vancouver. I even managed to catch up with some of the other people that flew over on my flight, and it looks like things are all go for me moving to Kitsilano.

There were two major places that I explored this week and where I took the most photos. The first was The Lost Lagoon, a man made area of Stanley Park which hosts a large variety of animals and birds (I had my first raccoon sighting there, as evidenced below) and also Dundarave, a sea-side village in West Vancouver where I explored a little and had lunch on the beach.

Week Thirteen

The sun has finally made an appearance here in Vancouver, meaning I was able to go out walking and exploring over the weekend, though no pics of any substance. On Saturday I was wandering around the Kitsilano area where, fingers crossed, I may be moving to at the end of the month, depending on whether the apartment I go see on Monday is any good. And on Sunday I was following one of the nature trails in North Vancouver.

I finished my temping job on Friday so now I have to set up something else with my temping agency and see what else is out there. I’m going to treat the time not working as an unexpected holiday though until something comes up.

Till next week…

Week Twelve

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

This week seems to have gone particularly fast, given that there was the build-up to Easter and a three-day weekend (I had to work Monday alas). I spent the week mainly at work and trying in vain to catch up with all my emails – there is seriously not enough time but I will get to everyone eventually, promise!
The bulk of my weekend was spent on Bowen Island with my family again, where I had a great time, despite the brief interruption to the electricity across the island due to a nasty storm and trees falling on power lines. But we were pretty quickly brought back into the 21st century.

Week Eleven

Please note photos have been removed due to lack of hosting space.

So I actually had a productive weekend, in the brief day that it didn’t rain. I knew coming here that it rained a lot, but this is getting ridiculous! Anyway, did some shopping in the mall near my house and then decided that I absolutely needed to go for a walk/take some photos. So I headed downtown and wandered around Canada Place which has now opened up again, after having been largely closed off for the Olympics. But this week’s post will focus on the bald eagle artwork dotted around the city – only a handful, there’s lots more I don’t yet have pics of:

Week Ten

Another abysmally short post this week I’m afraid. Work is going okay – I’ve been asked to stay on for a few more weeks and the house-hunting is on the backburner for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I managed to head out to do some shopping when it was a little sunny but I had to rethink my plans for a walk today when it started to rain, again. I thoroughly intend to take some photos next week, even if it’s just of downtown Vancouver. I’ll scour my guidebook for things I can do after work one day.

On the plus side though the writing is going well and I have some short stories finished and am well on my way to finishing the novel.

Till next week…
