Wollaton Hall and Miniature Masterpieces

I recently decided to take a long walk around Wollaton Hall and Deer Park as I hadn’t been for a while and was in need of some fresh air. It was also deer rutting season and though I didn’t see any stags I did see a lot more female deer than usual, plus a load of squirrels.

Most of the deer had set up shop on the site of the golf green that runs either side of the park.

As I was walking further along the path I remembered that there was an exhibition on at the hall that I’d been meaning to visit. Miniature Masterpieces is a series of sculptures by Dr Willard Wigan that are so small they fit in the eye of a needle. They were really well done – my particular favourites were Robin Hood and a version of Girl with a Pearl Earring. No chance of taking any photographs of course – they can only be viewed through microscope – but you can see some of them here. The exhibition is free as part of the general free entry to the hall and is on until the end of October.

From here I continued my walk down to the lake and went around it a different way than I normally do before heading back the way I came, encountering even more squirrels and deer – though the squirrels were particularly active and didn’t stay still long enough for me to take any photos.
