Mostyn, Llandudno

I’ve previously written a bit about the art gallery Mostyn but this was my first time actually going inside of the building to see one of the exhibitions. Lady Henrietta Augusta Mostyn, of the Llandudno land owning family, was a patron of the arts and an artist herself and lent her name and support to the creation of the gallery. The building was designed by G A Humphreys and officially opened in 1902.

The building gradually stopped acting as a gallery and was at various points home to a rifle club, a chemists (Boots), a grocers, headquarters for the Volunteer Training Corps during World War I and a home for Belgian refugees in 1914.

I’m not much of a modern art fan and I can’t say I was particularly moved by the exhibition that was on when I visited – “Temporary Atlas: Mapping the Self in Today’s Art” featuring a number of artists exploring different ways to create and interpret maps. The brochure to the exhibition is here and I apologise that I can’t immediately place these two artworks with their artist having misplaced the paper copy of the brochure I was given.

The gallery is free and not very large so you can easily pop in for an hour to have a wonder around and there’s also a shop on the ground floor and a cafe upstairs.
