Christmas at Warwick Castle

Originally built from wood by William the Conqueror in 1068 Warwick Castle was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century. It’s been home to many important historical figures, possibly the most well known being Richard Neville who was nicknamed the Kingmaker due to his actions during the Wars of the Roses. But, learning about the history of the castle wasn’t really my purpose for visiting last weekend. (It vaguely had been but it soon became clear that Christmas at the Castle was very much its own thing and I wasn’t going to learn much about the history while there – I bought a guidebook for that!). This visit was part of an annual tradition with a friend to visit a Christmas light show or market every year. We’ve done this for a very long time, only having to cancel plans during COVID lockdowns. You can read about some of our past adventures here and here.

The Great Orme via West Shore Beach, Llandudno

After visiting the West Shore Beach and walking all the way to Deganwy and back I then ventured partly up the Great Orme. I didn’t venture very far; I’d done a considerable amount of walking by that point but as it was the last day of my holiday I pushed on for a bit to see the views from this side of the Orme.

White Rabbit Sculpture, Llandudno

This rather pretty statue can be found just by the West Shore Beach and is yet another one of Llandudno’s homages to Alice in Wonderland, this time representing the white rabbit who is always running late. It was unveiled in 1933 by former prime minister David Lloyd George.

North Western Gardens, Llandudno

A small green space just down the road from Mostyn Art Gallery, it perhaps isn’t the most photogenic of Llandudno’s areas but it is home to the White Rabbit statue, part of the Alice in Wonderland trail and a couple of other interesting items, including what I’ve since learnt are some infamous public toilets. It was named for the nearby North Western Hotel which is now a Premier Inn.

Titanosaur Exhibition at the Natural History Museum, London

On a recent trip to London I made the spontaneous decision to head out to see the Titanosaur exhibition at the NHM as I had a couple of hours to kill after checking into my hotel. The exhibit had been on my general to do list in London since it was first announced but I hadn’t been sure I’d be able to make it until I realised that the museum closed later than I thought it did, at 5.50pm, so I would be able to fit it in afterall.

Deganwy, Wales

I didn’t spend a lot of time in Deganwy, in fact I wasn’t even intending to visit it at all, I just walked along Llandudno’s West Shore Beach and kept on going until I’d reached the town.

Halloween Post: Witch Corner and the Halloween Trail at Abbotsford, Scotland

Abbotsford was the home of Sir Walter Scott, writer of such classics as Waverley and Ivanhoe. I’ll have much more to say about the house and gardens later, but in the grounds of the house they’ve created Witch Corner, an interactive story trail inspired by the writings and research of Scott who was particularly interested in Scottish folktales. In fact Witch Corner takes its name from Scott’s nickname for the section of his library that contains 250 rare books about witchcraft, folklore and superstition.

Halloween Post: City of Edinburgh Underground Ghost Tour

If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know that I recently returned from a week away in Scotland. It’ll be a little while before I start on those posts in depth but in honour of the spooky season I’m bringing forward a couple of them. On one of my evenings in Edinburgh I decided to do a ghost/history tour, and this one was the one that came most highly recommended. I didn’t take a huge amount of photos since much of the tour took place in the dark. The tour was lead by John Napier who was dressed in period costume (I can’t remember who he said he was representing now – a scientist of some sort) and he was a very engaging guide. The group was quite large, around 20 or so of us I think and we met here at the tour’s ticket booth.

West Shore Beach and Wales Coast Path, Llandudno

Personally I think that Llandudno’s West Shore is the best beach in the town. I don’t know what its like at the height of summer but whenever I’ve been it’s been quiet, well maintained and very peaceful. On this trip I ended up walking the length of the beach, carrying on through the Wales Coast Path and then on to Deganwy, a nearby town which will feature in the next post.

Wollaton Hall and Miniature Masterpieces

I recently decided to take a long walk around Wollaton Hall and Deer Park as I hadn’t been for a while and was in need of some fresh air. It was also deer rutting season and though I didn’t see any stags I did see a lot more female deer than usual, plus a load of squirrels.
