St Mary’s Rest Garden is a small park next to Victoria Park and the Victoria Swimming Baths in Nottingham. Formally a cemetery, a Quaker by the name of Samuel Fox donated the land after an outbreak of cholera in 1835.

Watson Fothergill was an English architect who designed over 100 buildings in Nottingham. Many of the city’s most striking buildings and some of my personal favourites were designed by him, so I decided to dedicate this blog post to some of his achievements.

In what I’m planning to be a continuing exploration of Nottingham’s architecture, one day in March I decided to walk around some of the suburbs of Nottingham, taking pictures of any old buildings that caught my eye and when I got home did a bit of research to see if any had a particularly interesting story. Most did, and I learnt a lot of interesting facts about buildings I’ve passed but never given much thought to before.

This week Nottingham has hosted the European Archery Championship and I was able to attend the morning session on Sunday 29 May held in the Market Square. This is the first time that the competition has been held in Britain for nearly 40 years and as the last opportunity for some archers to secure a place at the 2016 Rio Olympics it’s a pretty big deal.

On 25 September, 150 years to the day when Theatre Royal Nottingham had its opening night, I went along to one of their open days held to celebrate this impressive feat and through which I was able to take a behind the scenes tour of a theatre I regularly visit and which I’ve always thought Nottingham is very lucky to have on its doorstep. The brothers John and William Lambert, wealthy Nottingham factory owners, wanted to provide the city with an entertainment venue and hired the architect Charles Phipps to make their dream a reality in 1865. It took him 6 months and £15,000 to build one of my favourite buildings in the city. (Its cost today would be in the millions).

Newark became a town in the early 10th century and it became important militarily for fending off raids. When I visited Newark Castle the Tourist Information office suggested I take some of the self-guided walking tour leaflets with me, and though in the end I didn’t have the time to fully complete the trails I did have a wander around the town taking pictures of some of the more interesting buildings that proved to have quite an interesting history.

On one of our sunnier June days I decided to take photos of all the wicker sculptures that make up this year’s floral trail, organised by Nottingham City Council’s Nottingham in Bloom Team and the Nottingham Business Improvement District.

While visiting Newark the impressive spire of St. Mary Magdalene Church caught my eye and I decided to take a closer look. It’s apparently one of the largest parish churches in the country, and it certainly proved larger than I was expecting when I stepped inside.

On my recent visit to Newark I popped in to the Tourist Information Centre where they recommended I visit the Town Hall Museum. It’s certainly housed within an impressive building; built in 1776 it is Grade I listed and the museum opened up in part of the building in 1999. Entry was free, though unfortunately photography was not allowed inside.

On what proved to be a slightly more blustery day than I had expected I decided to head out to Newark Castle. I didn’t know much about the site other than it was now ruins so I would highly recommend taking advantage of the guided tour. It doesn’t happen every day so you do have to ring Newark Tourist Information in advance but I found it very interesting and it does give you the opportunity to enter areas which are usually closed to the public, such as the towers and undercroft.
