Cowane’s Hospital, Stirling

Located next to the Church of the Holy Rude, Cowane’s Hospital is a 17th centruy almshouse. It’s named for John Cowane, a businessman who left money for its establishment in 1637. The money he left was to allow for twelve elderly members of the Merchant Guildry of Stirling to live rent free in their old age.

In 2019 the building was refurbished and there is now an exhibition inside and I gather a cafe, though it wasn’t open when I visited. A fun local myth is that the statue over the entrance called Auld Staneybreeks (a nickname in reference to the style of his trousers) comes to life and dances at the strike of midnight every Hogmanay.

  1. Nice one.

So the old trousers were called staneybreeks?

Actually the only reference I could find was specifically to his trousers being called that, so maybe it only related to his statue rather than the style in of itself.
