Nottingham Light Night 2026

Light Night returned this February for its usual two nights of free light sculptures, musical events and as last year, decorated ducks in shop windows. This is its 18th year and it’s always a great night out though I certainly never see everything on offer. This year was also the worst weather I think we’ve ever had during the event though it certainly didn’t seem to be putting anyone off, myself included. I first went to Sneinton Market Square which had this lovely sculpture called The Cat That Slept For A Thousand Years. Created by Air Giant its an inflatable cat that you can hear purring and whose tail gently moves as they sleep. Very cute and popular – took a while for the crowd to clear so I could get a picture.

In the Old Market Square was Parallels created by Architecture Social Club. This wasn’t as impressive as previous years in the square, being this light machine and playing music but with the pouring rain and fog machines making the area look far bleaker than it was in reality it did create an impressive atmosphere. I particularly liked the person in the blue costume, they were truly doing their bit to entertain.

In Trinity Square was this lovely little octopus lantern titled Move with Marina. Four of the tentacles could be moved around by the audience – I saw some children doing just that before I took this photo. It was created by a collaboration by AyUp Puppets and Made by Raccoons, two great names.

Then like last year there were the glowing yellow ducks decorated by businesses around the city centre. It’s becoming something of a tradition now to hunt down as many as I can as I walk around between events. Some of my favourites are below.

Fryer Duck

Divine Duckeh

Performative Male

Lady MacBath

Robber Duck (all the banks in town had a similar theme!)

Duck Vader

Giggles McWiggles

It’s always a great night out, even in terrible weather, and very family friendly – there’s lots of events I don’t go to because they’re aimed more at children. No doubt I’ll be back making a post about it this time next year.
