Last Boxing Day my Dad and I decided to go for a walk around Gedling Country Park for a bit of fresh air and nature. Lots of other people, and their dogs, had had a similar idea so we did have to wait about 10 minutes before we could find a parking spot but after that the park is so big that it was easy not to feel crowded.

The weather as you can see was pretty good – bright and sunny though certainly cold enough for a hat if not gloves. And even though everywhere has been battered by storms over the Christmas period there didn’t seem any obvious damage anywhere and the paths were as clear and well kept as they usually are. The water levels did seem to have risen quite a bit though (I gather they’re even worse now).

I also noticed, when checking the opening times of the car park before we headed out, that there was a new sculpture in the park. They do have a trail of wooden sculptures which I’ve taken photos of before, but this one is made of metal and depicts an eternal flame as a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. It’s placed in the middle of a circle of seats, as a place to reflect, though it was a little too cold for that on this occasion.

We went around what they call the Top Hard route, which is around 2.8km and contains a lot of steep slopes but gives some of the best views of the surrounding countryside and there are several viewing platforms that allow you to see as far away as Lincoln Cathedral and even Belvoir Castle.
