Christmas Post: Winter Craft Fair at Southwell Minster

As you know from previous posts I really like the Christmas season and have decided this year to visit a few new places particularly Christmas markets/fairs as well as my usual Christmas trip with a friend. The first one was the Winter Craft Fair at Southwell Minster which I visited last Saturday. Incredibly the last time I visited the Minster (and wrote about it here) was in 2013! This is in part because it’s about a 40-45 minute bus journey from where I live but a pleasant route through some picturesque villages.

Bath Christmas Market December 2024

Over the years Bath Christmas Market has become a staple of mine and my friend’s annual Christmas outing. The atmosphere is always lovely and the stalls are genuinely full of beautiful unique products from local sellers. The centre of Bath is really taken over by the market but it’s also worth going into the brick and mortar shops as well because Bath is well known for its independent shops. Everywhere seems to get into the spirit with lovely decorations wherever you look.

Winter Wonderlands

In mid November Nottingham, like many places in the UK, had its first snow of the season. We’d been expecting it but the amount certainly took people by surprise, myself included. It was perfect snow for going on a walk, compact and not slippery or icy. Since snow always helps get me in the Christmas mood I thought I’d share some photos of the snow, plus some of the Christmas markets/events I’ve attended so far this year.

Bath Christmas Market 2022

I spent the first few days of this week visiting with a friend including a day trip to Bath’s Christmas market. We had been before, a few years before COVID, but only spent a limited time there so on this trip we wanted to get there early and enjoy a full-ish day making a dint in our Christmas shopping. It was easier to drive rather than take the train, particularly with the train strikes and we knew that Bath has a very efficient Park and Ride system, with several sites available around the city. Parking is free, you just pay for the bus ticket (we paid £5.40 for two adults, other combinations of fares are available) and the buses are regular and take about 10 minutes. The weather was extremely foggy which, while making for a slightly eventful drive home, also made for some atmospheric photos, especially later on in the day when the lights started to come on.

Nottingham Christmas Market

Last week I took a walk around the Christmas Market in Nottingham’s Market Square in order to take some photos. There’s no ice rink this year for obvious reasons and it’s also supposed to be more spread out than usual (after last year’s debacle), though it honestly didn’t feel any more spread out than usual to me. There are some familiar sights however such as the tree, the wheel, the helter skelter and the flashing snowflakes on the front of the Council House and the lights certainly do brighten up the gloomy evenings.
