After finishing wandering around the Valley Cemetery rather than head back to the train station the way I had come I decided to follow a different route down that I learned afterwards was called the Back Walk. It was created between 1724 and 1791 and follows the outline of where the old city walls would have been.

Turn right and you go up to the castle, turn left and you can stroll down a gentle slope to the city. It’s a very comfortable walk with wide well laid out paths.

This section passes by the back of Cowane’s Hospital (to feature in a later post) and the back wall of the old town jail. According to a plaque on the wall the Town Council was furious when this section of the old town walls was demolished in order to incorporate the jail which opened in 1847.

It was a very pleasant way to get back down to the town centre and the railway station under a canopy of green trees, though those same trees do mean that there’s not necessarily much of a view as you walk down.
Looks lovely.
