Sheep’s Green and Coe Fen, Cambridge

If you’re looking for a bit of greenery in Cambridge you can look no further than the Backs and Sheep’s Green and Coe Fen Nature Reserves. It can be found along the west bank of the River Cam and steps away from the busier streets of the city.

The fen is managed with natural diversity in mind and for part of the year is grazed on by cattle and sometimes horses, though I was visiting just at the wrong time to see that for myself.

I walked through rather a lot of the area and sat on a bench just taking in the views. It’s a lovely place to walk along the River Cam and there’s well maintained paths so you don’t have to walk on the grass if you don’t want to – a bonus in wet weather! Of note to the naturalists – Charles Darwin is said to have conducted surveys on beetles around here.
